I was the sole victim of a terrorist attack in
January. It wasn’t reported by the media. I
suffered no injuries – but I was almost annihilated.
I was walking my dog one night – a rare night
when every star in the sky was heavy with
brilliance. I had the feeling that there were almost
too many of them – that they were too close. And
the air was so clear that I had to keep looking up
at the spectacle.
Then I got “practical” – as opposed to poetic. I
started thinking about how the stars were
numberless and how great the distances were
even to the planets in our own solar system –
about how Grand Rapids is just a dot on the map
of Michigan, and while Michigan might be seen
from a weather satellite, Grand Rapids doesn’t
show up. And I am less than a dot in our fair city,
and simply don’t exist when you start talking
larger realms. I looked out into space, and I just
didn’t exist any more.
That was terrifying.
I have always had trouble with life’s unanswerable
questions. I used to toy with the idea that no
matter how vast the universe, it was all contained
in an enormous box. I just couldn’t fathom
endless space, you see. But there soon
developed the nagging question: uh, yeah – but
what’s outside the box?
I know now what is outside the box. The same
thing that is inside the box: God. God – the
creator, redeemer, sustainer. As I thought about
God, I came into existence again. I am somebody– I count for something – because God loves me.
The Psalmist must have had a similar experience
that prompted him to ask: What is man that you
are mindful of him?
The purpose of terrorism, I believe, is to show the
victim who is really in control. Interesting the
means by which God sends his children back to
Square One, isn’t it?

Postscript:
As we enter a new year at the Recreation Center,
we as staff, and you the members, are reminded
that we begin this year with our God, aware of His
greatness and mindful of our place in the universe
and in this world.
